Where on Google Earth #129

To the Lost Geologist's surprise, I rather quickly found his WoGE 128. Admittedly, due to a bit of luck and being inspired by travelling through the Harz just some days earlier…

For today's WoGE, I tried to find something less German, and after some zooming around I came across this nice-looking feature (part of which seems to extend quite a distance to the NE):

For any new players to Where on (Google) Earth, simply post latitude and longitude or a description of the location in the comments. Even better, write something about the geography or geology. If you win, you get to host the next one. The Schott Rule seems to have fallen out of favour these days, so I don't invoke it.

Good luck!

Finding it was easy - explaining what it has proved to be a tough case.

    Location: -23.5898° S and 15.2959° E

It is Southwest of Windhoek and Southeast of Walvis Baai at the Nothern edge of the Namib desert. The area should be Neoproterozoic in age and now comes the tricky part...I didn't find a source so this is what I came up with.

    a) it is a huge, dipping anticline

    b) it is actually relativly flat layers with a window that looks thru them.

The dark layers could be metamorphosed dark pelitic sediments, amphibole schists maybe? The region is known to host SEDEX type deposits in the metamorphosed rock.

This is the Damara orogen, no? Part of the more Matchless Belt?

SEDEXs again? I should have taken more care to avoid your most favourite topic besides snails. :-p

Yes, it's part of the Damara orogen's Matchless Amphibolite Belt. I still wonder where the name is coming from.

    So it's your turn again!

    Unerwartet Amok laufender Spam-Filter? 🙁

    Tut mir leid.

    Link ist nun sichtbar.
